On 17 December 2025, three representatives from the department participated in a visit to Huawei’s headquarters to examine potential avenues for collaboration in research, teaching and learning, as well as laboratory infrastructure development. The visit proved highly productive, providing colleagues with insights into the latest global advancements in innovative technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), smart campus solutions and applications, AI-driven motors, and large-scale database infrastructures. Furthermore, the delegation gained a deeper understanding of Huawei’s strategic development initiatives, which align closely with national priorities.

UnitedXR Europe 2025 – Hong Kong is organized by the Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Association (HKDEA), which spearheads a strategic initiative to establish a “Hong Kong Pavilion” at an international event in Brussels, Belgium. This project aims to showcase and promote Hong Kong’s creative industries through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR) technologies. In addition to serving as a judge for the “UnitedXR Europe 2025 Project – Hong Kong,” the ADS faculty member delivered a seminar entitled “XR-Beyond Entertainment: Extended Reality and New User Experiences” during the kick-off ceremony on 24 November 2025.

On 21 November 2025, a faculty member from the Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) was invited to serve as an Award Presenter for the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2025 in the categories of ICT Startup Award and Digital Entertainment Award. Additionally, the faculty member contributed as a member of the judging panel during the evaluation process in August 2025.

Our Faculty Member Participates in the NEXX CFO Forum 2025 at the Google Hong Kong office on Nov 19th, 2025. Organized by NEXX Innovation Alliance in close collaboration with Google Cloud, the forum served as a premier platform for CFOs, CXOs, senior financial executives and technology leaders from diverse industries to explore how cloud and AI can reshape enterprise performance.

The Department of Applied Data Science is excited to share the success of our recent workshop, “Build & Publish Your Flappy Bird Game in Unity.” On 17 November 2025, Game Development Laboratory and VR Lab co-hosted an intensive workshop on building a Unity 2D game. This workshop guides all participants in building an infinite side-scroller where a bird navigates between green pipes, incorporating physics-based movement, collision detection, scoring systems, a polished UI, and game state management. Within four hours, all participants have successfully recreated the classic Flappy Bird game in Unity and published it on Itch.io. This workshop offers a great opportunity for our students to develop their hands-on technical skills and encourages them to start building their creative portfolios using a simple game mechanism.

On November 15, 2025, during Info Day at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, Dr. Muhammad Azhar, Associate Head and Programme Director of the BSc in Applied Data Science, delivered a compelling talk titled “Empowering the Future Workforce: Integrated Education in Applied Data Science.” The presentation focused on the BSc-ADS undergraduate program, showcasing its innovative curriculum designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge required to excel in the rapidly evolving field of data science. Dr. Azhar underscored the program’s blend of practical training and theoretical foundations, highlighting its role in preparing graduates to meet future workforce demands while reinforcing the department’s strong commitment to academic excellence and relevance to industry needs.

On November 15, 2025, during the Info Day at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, Dr. Muhammad Azhar, a faculty member of the Department of Applied Data Science, was honored with the prestigious 2024–2025 Teaching Excellence Award. This distinguished recognition celebrated his exceptional dedication and impactful contributions toward enhancing teaching quality across the university community. On the evening of October 31, 2025, the Preparatory Committee of the Department of Applied Data Science at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, in collaboration with SenseTime and the open-source organization DataWhale, held the “AI + X Campus Tour: SenseTime LazyLLM Workshop” in Room H303, 3rd Floor, Wen Kang Building.

On October 28, we hosted the grand opening of the Game Development Laboratory. The opening ceremony featured a special Esports competition showcase, where student players teamed up with senior university management to participate in an exciting match. The event celebrated collaboration, innovation, and the future of game development in education and industry.

On 24 October 2025, colleague of the Department of Applied Data Science have been invited to participate in the 2025 Future Science Prize Week, an event celebrating the achievements in the field of science. Established in 2016 through the collaborative efforts of scientists and entrepreneurs, the Future Science Prize emphasizes original basic scientific research and recognizes individuals (regardless of nationality) who have made significant scientific contributions in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan.

Department of Applied Data Science students participated in the prestigious JUCC × IBM watsonx GenAI Hackathon held at The University of Hong Kong Centennial Campus on 18 October 2025, under the supervision of ADS faculty member Dr. Muhammad Azhar, and became finalists.

On the afternoon of October 11, 2025, members of the Preparatory Committee for the Department of Applied Data Science at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, in collaboration with the Business Investment Society and 68 participating students, jointly attended the Fall Research Tools Workshop for Theses. This event aimed to enhance students' academic research efficiency and thesis writing skills through specialized workshops and practical guidance, covering research workflow management, AI writing techniques, and productivity tools. It also strengthened ties between the Department Committee, students, and the Business Investment Society

Our faculty members participated in the prestigious LSCM Logistics Summit 2025 held at Hong Kong Science Park on 10 October 2025. The summit gathered industry leaders, government officials, and academics to discuss advancements in smart logistics and the Port Community System (PCS). Professor KL Fan, Dr. Muhammad Azhar, and Dr. Kevin Wong contributed their expertise, reflecting the faculty’s commitment to innovation in digital logistics, blockchain applications, and regional connectivity.

On September 20, 2025, members of the Applied Data Science Department Preparatory Committee of Hong Kong Shue Yan University, along with numerous participating students, participated in the Hong Kong Shue Yan University x Coze AI Workshop in classroom RLB502, 5/F, Low Block, Graduate School Complex. This workshop, co-organized by the Preparatory Committee and ByteDance's Coze AI Agent platform, aimed to provide students with a deep understanding of AI Agent and the Coze platform, enabling them to master various Coze functions and experience the empowering value of AI in learning, life, and the workplace.

The Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) successfully hosted the 2025 Orientation Day for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs and the Graduate School. The events occurred on 26 August (Tuesday) and 29 August (Friday) 2025, marking the introduction of new members to our expanding academic community.

The ADS’s Annual Departmental Retreat was successfully conducted on 21st August 2025, serving as a valuable platform for faculty members to exchange ideas, foster collaboration, and share expertise. We were honored to have senior management from the University in attendance, including Senior Vice President Prof. Catherine Sun, Academic Vice President Prof. Selina Chan, and Associate Academic Vice President for University Research Dr. Alex Li, who provided valuable insights to our colleagues.

The Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) recently hosted a seminar and discussion event in collaboration with Hong Kong Game Development Association (HKGD) . 仁大全新課程「娛樂及遊戲應用數碼方案（榮譽）理學士」旨在培養學生具備整合數碼娛樂與遊戲應用的專業理論知識及技能，在跨學科科目中掌握管理與溝通能力，以應對遊戲開發產業對數碼專業人才日益增長的需求。畢業生可於遊戲產業中擔任互動遊戲設計師、數碼娛樂製作人、機器人設計師、軟體工程設計師，又或遊戲創意產業中的各個崗位。

2025年6月6日到7日，應用數據科學學系學生會3位代表同學參加了博鰲亞洲論壇國際科技與創新論壇2025年香港會議。本次會議由博鰲亞洲論壇與香港特別行政區政府共同主辦，是該論壇首次在香港舉辦，標誌著香港在推動國際科技創新合作方面邁出了重要一步。在應用數據科學系會籌備委員會與香港菁英會的合作下，應用數據科學系會籌備委員會為本系學生爭取到了3個名額。本屆會議以「科技引領未來，創新驅動轉型」為主題，同時香港論壇的討論亦聚焦於「善用香港內聯外通優勢，促進全球創新協作」。會議吸引了約800名來自海內外的頂尖專家、學者、政商領袖及國際組織代表，共同探討全球科技創新的發展現狀、挑戰與未來趨勢。

應用數據科學學系代表參加了第十六屆海峽兩岸和香港、澳門經貿合作研討會會議。本屆研討會由中華全國工商業聯合會、香港中華廠商聯合會、台灣工商企業聯合會和澳門中華總商會共同主辦。當日研討會還設立主旨演講和專題討論環節，與會者圍繞“數字經濟發展趨勢與機遇”“智能科技與產業升級”等議題展開討論。

ADS 代表參加香港專業及資深行政人員協會於6月2日舉辦的「專資會高峰論壇2025 : 創新科技 構建未來」。當日，創新科技及工業局局長孫東擔任主禮嘉賓並進行專題發言，以及邀請到香港大學校長張翔、協會副會長兼香港應用科技研究院董事局主席李惠光，以及香港科技大學首席副校長郭毅可擔任專題發言分享嘉賓。當日約200位嘉賓滙聚一堂，交流暢敘，共同為香港構建國際創新科技中心出謀獻策。

We are proud to announce that the results of the 2025 Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) have been officially released, and our Applied Data Science program has achieved a significant milestone. This year, two teams from our department participated in this prestigious international competition, both earning the Successful Participant award. This accomplishment highlights our students’ strong academic abilities and outstanding teamwork. We would also like to extend our gratitude to Dr. Muhammad AZHAR, who served as the advisor for both teams.

Our faculty member has been invited to participate in the World Internet Conference 2025, to be held in Hong Kong. The World Internet Conference (WIC) was established as an international organization on July 12, 2022, with its headquarters located in Beijing, China. This initiative was jointly launched by several prominent entities, including the Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), the National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Alibaba Group, Tencent, and Zhijiang Lab. The WIC is dedicated to the governance of global internet development and actively seeks to establish a high-level dialogue platform for the international internet community.

The Outstanding Performance Scholarship (OPS) goes to CHUNG, Ze Kin, while the Reaching Out Award (ROA) is awarded to ZHANG, Linjing; ZHANG, Zijian; LIAO, Wenxuan; LIU, Junhe; and KUANG, Xiurong. The Department sincerely appreciates these students for their hard work and excellence in performance.

In the context of Industry Revolution 4.0, the proliferation of AI tools has significantly impacted daily life, particularly in the realm of education. Understanding how AI tools can enhance teaching and learning processes has become increasingly crucial. On March 26, 2025, Lenovo invited Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) to participate in an educational event aimed at exploring the ways in which new personal AI tools can support educators in both teaching and research endeavors. The event showcased various computing devices equipped with AI capabilities, enabling participants to experience and leverage cutting-edge technology. This initiative aims to foster success and creativity among educators across diverse disciplines, including both the liberal arts and the sciences.

HONG KONG, March 20, 2025 - The Preparatory Committee of the Department of Applied Data Science at Hong Kong Shue Yan University organized a specialized workshop titled "Long-term & Short-term Paper Workshop: AI Tools." The event, jointly hosted with HA Spencer and strongly supported by the university's Business Investment Society, attracted 31 students who participated enthusiastically.

On 13 March 2025, our faculty members participated in IBM Hong Kong Technology Forum 2025. This year's theme is "Capture AI's Full Potential". This event brought various visionary leaders, industry innovators and IT professionals to explore the potential of open AI. By participating in panel discussions and keynote sessions hosted by the best from industry, our colleagues gained valuable insights and learned about the latest industry trends and technologies.

The Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China visited our Virtual Reality Laboratory (VR Lab) at Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) on 26th Feb 2025, focusing on the subject of the integration of virtual and augmented reality in education. This visit highlighted the University's innovative approach to digital pedagogy, emphasizing the importance of cutting-edge technology in enhancing student learning experiences.

The Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) hosted a well-attended seminar on February 25th featuring Dr. C.H. Cheng, Director of Research and Technology Development at the Logistics & Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Centre (LSCM). Dr. Sheena Ramazanu and Dr. Natalie LEE Po Man from Hong Kong Metropolitan University recently visited the Social Robotics and Digital Living Lab at Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU). It is an honour of our faculty member to attend the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Future Science Prize Week, hosted by the Future Science Awards Foundation. This event is scheduled on November 1st at the Hong Kong Science Museum. It was an extraordinary gathering of scientific luminaries and enthusiasts.

The Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) hosted a well-attended seminar featuring Dr. Lucas Göbeler from the University of Hamburg on October 31, 2024. Invited by Dr. Bob Ke, Assistant Professor at ADS, Dr. Göbeler delivered his talk titled "Hybrid Sports – Digital Innovation through Resource Integration," which attracted a diverse audience of faculty members and students. The seminar was held at RHB507 (Virtual Reality Lab).

Aligning with all UGC-funded and private universities in Hong Kong, a faculty member from the Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) had the honour of joining the first CUPP 2025 Organizational Committee Meeting on 30 October 2024, on behalf of HKSYU. The CUPP aims to groom and develop promising young tech and entrepreneurial talents in Hong Kong who could become future entrepreneurs.

Colleagues from the Department participated in the Cyberport Venture Capital Forum 2024 on October 24 and 25, which focused on addressing global market uncertainties, economic volatility, and geopolitical challenges. Various entrepreneurs from digital sectors shared their compelling visions and experiences on navigating this complex and competitive landscape while driving sustainable growth.

We were pleased to welcome Prof. Ruiqi Wei, Associate Professor at Em Lyon Business School, to HKSYU on October 23, 2024. On October 19, 2024, two teams of four talented students from the Applied Data Science (ADS) department stole the show at the Art Tech event, sweeping excellence awards in the AI Image Generation competition and VR Art Therapy Competition, and making it to the finals!

The University’s senior management, department representatives, and students participated in the impressive 2nd Art Tech Innovation Event (第二屆 Art Tech 創新活動) held on October 18 and 19, 2024. We were honored to welcome Mr. Ng Chi Wo, Head of the Chinese Culture Promotion Office from HKSAR, along with his colleagues, to HKSYU on October 17, 2024. During their visit, they shared insights on the latest developments in promoting Chinese culture within the community. Two ADS academic staff out of five scholars of Hong Kong Shue Yan University are among the World Top 2% most cited scientists, according to a 2024 report recently released by Stanford University.

With the support and engagement of students, the Department held its first "Open-source Learning Mobilization" meeting on 26th September 2024, at the Innovation and Incubation Hub (IIH) at HKSYU. This meeting is a key component of the departmental "Open-source Learning Initiative."

Thanks to the invitation from the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Center, our faculty member, along with ten students from the Department of Applied Data Science (ADS), enjoyed a captivating performance of "Qian Xuesen" presented by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Drama Troupe at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University theatre on 26th September 2024.

The representative from the ADS is pleased to attend the celebratory dinner marking the 75th Anniversary of the People's Republic of China – The Higher Education Sector of Hong Kong 2024. The event provides an opportunity to engage with numerous professors from various disciplines and institutions.

On 24th September 2024, the Civil Service Bureau (CSB) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) organized a wonderful "Government Career Fair 2024" on the campus of HKSYU. A total of 13 government bureaux and departments participated, presenting information on over 20 civil service grades. This event provided students with valuable insights and opportunities to shape their future career paths.

Our faculty member was honoured to serve as judges for the 2nd Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Postdoctoral Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition - Hong Kong Region. A number of promising postdoctoral candidates and teams were selected to represent Hong Kong. We were impressed and excited to review the innovative ideas and practices presented, all aimed at advancing the development of applied science and technology in Greater China.

The Department launched a new promotional video in early August, marking a significant milestone in its outreach efforts. Prior to this launch, we would like to express our gratitude to all members and students for their contributions.

The Department successfully completed the accreditation process for new programmes in early September 2024. With the full support of senior management and colleagues, the accreditation was carried out smoothly and effectively. We look forward to the next page!

The Annual Departmental Retreat was successfully conducted in late August 2024, providing a valuable platform for the sharing of ideas and expertise among faculty members. The Department is poised to embark on a new chapter with the incorporation of new colleagues: Dr. Bob Ke and Dr. M. Nawaz.

Our faculty members participated in the annual Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum (DELF) 2024, organized by Cyberport, from August 16 to 18 at the Cyberport campus. The theme for this year was "Imaginary Fairground: AI-Powered Entertainment in the Web 3.0 Era." The event included industry forums, experiential zones, workshops, and competitions, creating an immersive carnival atmosphere for attendees.

Our ADS colleagues attended the premier Business GoVirtual (BGOV) event this year, which gathered business leaders, entrepreneurs, enterprises, innovators, IT experts, solution providers, marketers, and others seeking to stay ahead of the technological curve and empower their businesses through digital transformation.

On Thursday, 04 July 2024, students and teachers from Caritas Yuen Long Chan Chun Ha Secondary School visited Shue Yan University to explore the Virtual Reality Yulan Museum II.

Hong Kong Shue Yan University welcomed the Indonesia Embassy representatives to pay a visit to Virtual Reality Laboratory on 7 May 2024.

To enhance the digital competency of students in digital humanities, the Virtual Reality Laboratory (VR Lab) under the Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) has organized the first One-Day Intensive Workshop for students from Social Work backgrounds.

The External Visit of the Association of Secondary School Principals in the Virtual Reality (VR) Lab was an immersive and enlightening experience. The principals were welcomed into the state-of-the-art VR Lab at SYU.

We are pleased to share a great news that a team of three Year 2 ADS students, were awarded Third prize (三等獎) in the university sector of the Sixth TipDM Cup Data Analysis Skills Competition co-organized by TipDM and National University Big Data Education Alliance.

SYU ADS students won the potential prize in Huawei ICT Competition 2023-24 Hong Kong. The Huawei ICT Competition is supported by 11 tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, with nearly 900 students participating.

Three team of Year 1 ADS students received Merit Award in Hong Kong Macau Innovation Design Match. They received their awards in the award presentation ceremony in Oct-2023.

香港樹仁大學舉行「2022-2023年度校監優異成績榜」頒獎禮（President’s List Ceremony），表揚在2022/2023學年考獲平均積點3.5或以上的一至三年級學生。今屆合共124名學生獲嘉許。

應用數據科學學系亦有兩名學生得獎, 分別為 二年級的 曾子健 和 郝雅軒 同學。

2023年秋，今年ADS除了原有第一班本科同學外，亦迎來新一學年的新同學, 雖然同學大部份是遠渡從故鄉來到香港讀書和學習，正值是中秋佳節，學系亦為一／二年級、本地與外地同學們安排了慶祝活動，好讓大家開心聯誼及加強學生們之間的聯繫。

A team of six Year 1 ADS students received Brand Award in Hong Kong Creative PR Competition 2023. This year, the number of participants is over 400. In the competition, each team need to design a PR campaign for a brand in Hong Kong. The ADS student team worked for Prologic Robotics Ltd. ADS students received the Brand Award and PR Talent Award.

香港樹仁大學於7月15日舉行「虛擬實境盂蘭勝會導覽」公眾發佈會暨講座，「三個潮籍盂蘭勝會：研究、傳承與推廣」計劃主持人、學術副校長兼社會學系陳蒨教授致辭時表示，「虛擬盂蘭勝會導覧」著重知識轉移，希望透過數碼技術，幫助年輕人了解盂蘭文化。

Hans, a first-year student of the Department of Applied Data Science at HKSYU, worked as an electronic product design assistant at GoPro (International) LTD from June to July this year. This internship experience made Hans have a fulfilling and meaningful summer vacation.

ADS Year 1 students presented 3 papers in Positive Technology International Conference during 27 to 30-June-2023.

ADS department was invited to deliver a talk “The Future of AI” to Shue Yan alumni on 16-June-2023. Attendees involving alumni from different departments joined the discussion session after the talk. All participants enjoyed food and drinks and great chats among them.

Prof. Haohuan FU, Professor of Department of Earth System Science in Tsinghua University, visited Department of Applied Data Science on 27 May 2023. ADS students presented the demonstration in Big Data Lab and Robotic Lab. Prof Fu shared his study and work experiences with ADS students and answered students’ questions.

Four HKSYU researchers are in the World Top 2% most cited scientists in a report recently released by Stanford University. Two of them are from Department of Applied Science. The report reflects the research impacts to the academic community produced by colleagues and the recognitions of their works internationally.

In IBM Technology Day on 30 Aug 2022, Dr. Connie Yuen shared the story of SYU’s digital transformation journey on the stage. The Big Data Lab is equipped with IBM Cloud Pak for Data, which helps teachers and students to analyze data by using low-code or no-code approach. SYU’s digital transformation journey is still on the way. We are working hard to work with IBM partners in the future.

Department of Applied Data attended two Education Expo in July 2022 (The 28th Hong Kong International Education Expo and HKTDC Education & Careers Expo 2022). There are talks on the topic "Big data is everywhere - How to equip yourself ?" and VR driving demo are displayed for visitors' experience. Both are well-received by people interested in Data Science.

IBM香港宣佈香港樹仁大學(仁大，HKSYU)在IBM Cloud Pak for Data上擴充部署，採用領先市場的自然語言處理技術IBM Watson Discovery，促進和重塑樹仁博雅教育模式。

IBM Cloud Pak for Data is a new platform introduced into HKSYU. Predict outcomes faster using this platform built with data fabric architecture. Collect, organize and analyze data, with AI features to dynamically create, train, manage, and monitor AI and advanced models.

The Department of Applied Data Science is offering the first Bachelor of Science programme in Shue Yan University. The Bachelor of Science with Honours in Applied Data Science (BSc-ADS) is now open for application for Year-1 entry of academic year 2022.

The last Colloquium Series event in 2021 “AWS Cloud Essentials for Business Leaders” was held on 20 December 2021. Participants were being introduced basic concepts of cloud computing with useful case studies.

The second event in iFREE GROUP Innovation and Research Centre Colloquium Series 2021/22 seminar "Ad-Hoc Security for Smart Things" concluded successfully on 1 December 2021.

In order to purchase more robots and provide students with more experiential learning opportunities in the Big Data Laboratory, Social Robotics & Digital Living Laboratory, and Virtual Reality Laboratory, SYU hopes to receive further funding from the Research Grants Council.

iFREE GROUP Innovation and Research Centre won 3 international design awards, including 'Best Public Service Interior Hong Kong' in International Property Awards; 'DNA Paris Design Awards' and "Successful Design Award'.

The proposed programme is to respond to the HKSYU’s Strategic Plan 2021-25 to reinvent the liberal arts education for the digital era. Professor Louis LEUNG, Head of the Department, indicated that the BSc-ADS will admit the first batch of students in the summer of 2022.

Hong Kong Shue Yan University is going to offer two new undergraduate programmmes focusing on digital media technology and big data in the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic year respectively.

Three brand new laboratories have just been opened in September 2020 in Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU), focusing on how big data, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and robotic technologies can be applied to teaching, learning, and research in digital living.
