Dr. Liu Chang, Assistant Professor in the Department of Data Science and Digital Innovation at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, is presenting two interactive artworks combining ceramic sculpture with extended reality (XR) technology at the group exhibition Invisible Footprint. The exhibition runs from 23 September to 6 October 2026 at HKADC SHOWCASE. Organised by the Federation of Hong Kong Jiangsu Youth, it receives funding from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and City University of Hong Kong’s Cultural and Sports Committee, with equipment support from CityUHK’s School of Creative Media.

On 30 September 2026, the Department of Data Science and Digital Innovation welcomed mobile game developer Mr. Sam Adhikari for a Master Talk on rapid prototyping, shipping fast and validating game ideas.

DSDI students are invited to take part in the HKSAR 30th Smart-Tech Design Competition: AIoT for Northern Metropolis, marking the 30th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the Motherland. Xiaomi Corporation is the major sponsor and provides full software and hardware support through its own AIoT development platform. Teams of 2–4 students are asked to build a working AIoT model on one of three themes — Smart Living Green Smart Communities or Smart Infrastructure — and present their vision for the future development of the Northern Metropolis. All participating teams will receive dedicated workshop training on the Xiaomi AIoT platform between November 2026 and January 2027, so no prior experience with the hardware is needed. Prizes sponsored by Xiaomi include smart home appliances and digital products, and the First Prize also includes a study tour to Beijing with a visit to the Xiaomi Electric Vehicle Smart Factory

The theme for this year's highly anticipated competition is "AI-empowered Spatial Data Creating Boundless Potential". This is a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their technological skills and creativity.

Introduction & Competition Objectives The main objective of the CSDI Awards 2026 is to encourage participants to deeply integrate artificial intelligence (AI) with the analysis and use of spatial data, rather than treating AI only as a helper tool. The competition aims to explore innovative proposals for urban development, community services, and everyday life applications. Ultimately, it seeks to discover the crucial role of spatial data in building a smarter, more liveable, and more innovative Hong Kong.

On 21 September 2026, the Education Bureau (EDB) officially announced that the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Digital Solutions for Entertainment and Game Applications (BSc-DSEGA) has been included in the Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors (SSSDP) for the 2027/28 cohort, following the earlier inclusion of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Data Science (BSc-ADS). This development marks a significant milestone for the Department of Data Science and Digital Innovation (DSDI), which now offers two EDB-subsidised undergraduate programmes under the SSSDP scheme. Both programmes are recognised through the JUPAS, further enhancing their accessibility and attractiveness to prospective students.

On 15 September 2026, Intangible Cultural Heritage Office (ICH) representatives visited the Virtual Reality Laboratory (VRL) to review the project titled "Metaversing Intangible Cultural Heritage: Documenting, Transmitting and Promoting the Cheung Chau Jiao Festival", led by Prof. Selina Chan in collaboration with the VR Lab. The project is an excellent demonstration of digital humanities, recreating the festive scenes of the 2025 Cheung Chau Jiao Festival through 3D modelling technology and allowing the public to explore key locations, including the Pak Tai Temple Playground, the temporary opera shed, and the Pak Tai Temple itself within a virtual environment.

On 15 September 2026, the Social Robotics & Digital Living Laboratory at Hong Kong Shue Yan University hosted a demonstration of the Booster K1 intelligent robot. Mr. Leo Yang of Booster Robotics showcased its applications in entertainment, K–12 education, companionship and care for vulnerable groups, and sports. Designed for middle school and undergraduate learners, the humanoid robot features high-performance computing, rapid response, and a user-friendly design. The event explored how AI robots can enhance intelligent classroom instruction, hands-on projects, and interdisciplinary research in healthcare, social robotics, human-robot interaction, and digital living, providing equipment support, practical embodied-AI experience, and fostering academia–industry collaboration in AI-enabled social robotics.

In July 2026, our colleague Dr. Muhammad Azhar presented research titled “Detection of Anxiety and Depression from Social Media Text Using Natural Language Processing” at the 15th International Conference on Data Science, Technology and Applications (DATA 2026) in Porto, Portugal.

The Department is proud to announce that the project “SafeRent”, led by Dr. Philip Lee, Associate Professor of the Department of Economics and Finance (E&F), together with student members from the Department of Data Science and Digital Innovation (DSDI), has been awarded funding under the Cyberport University Partnership Programme (CUPP) 2026. Competing against teams from universities across Hong Kong, the project successfully secured HK$100,000 in Cyberport Creative Micro Fund (CCMF) funding.

Building on the success of the inaugural Master of Science in Game Development and Management (MSc-GDM) cohort, the Department proudly welcomed its second cohort of students at the departmental orientation held on 28 August 2026. The Department looks forward to nurturing a new generation of talent, building on the achievements of the first cohort, whose students demonstrated excellence in game development and explored innovative applications of gamification in areas such as serious games and health games.

On 28 August 2026, a graduate of the MSc in Game Development and Management (MSc-GDM) programme presented an innovative digital gaming project designed for both visually impaired and sighted users at the Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum 2026 (DELF 2026), Cyberport’s flagship annual event.

Our faculty member attended the Cyberport Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum (DELF) 2026 on August 28, representing Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) at this premier industry event. A central highlight of the forum was the official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between HKSYU and Cyberport, marking a significant strategic partnership designed to bridge academia and the digital technology sector.

Our faculty member attended the AInsane Hackathon: Reimagining Guest Experience for Star Ferry on August 28-30, 2026, at Cyberport, where Hong Kong Shue Yan University proudly served as an academic partner. Co-organized by the Hong Kong Society of Artificial Intelligence and Innovation (HKSAII) and the AInsane initiative, and supported by industry leaders including Cyberport, Samsung, Google Cloud, and Star Ferry Hong Kong, the event challenged students to apply modern digital frameworks to one of the city's most iconic heritage landmarks.

The Department successfully completed the HKCAAVQ accreditation exercise for a new undergraduate programme initiative on 25, 27, and 28 August 2026. The accreditation panel expressed appreciation for the hospitality, professionalism, and commitment for excellence demonstrated by the University Management, Department, and Programme Management Team, as well as the excellent support provided by colleagues from the Accreditation and Programme Development Office (APDO).

On 25 August 2026 (Tuesday), our Department successfully hosted the 2026 Orientation Day for undergraduate students enrolled in Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Applied Data Science (BSc-ADS) and Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Digital Solutions for Entertainment and Game Applications (BSc-DSEGA) in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs.

We are proud to announce that our faculty member, Dr. WONG Ying Kit, was invited to serve as an official judge for the QR Chatbot AI-Generated Mascot Design and Naming Competition.

Our faculty staff attended the closing ceremony of the 3rd Art Tech Innovation Event on August 15, 2026, at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. This great event was funded by the Innovation and Technology Commission and organized by The Hong Kong Wuyi Association, alongside co-organizers Hong Kong Shue Yan University, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, and The Oasis, with support from FengShows. It focused on making Hong Kong a world center for art technology, growing the art tech industry, and helping local young people learn about creative jobs and new industry trends. We are very proud that student works from our Master of Science in Game Development and Management program were also showing their capstone projects in the special exhibition during the event.

On 14 August 2025, the Department held its annual Departmental Retreat and Dinner, bringing together senior management and departmental colleagues to celebrate the achievements of the 2025/26 academic year and to discuss future directions for growth and development. The Department was honoured to have the support and presence of senior management at this special occasion. The event provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on the Department’s accomplishments over the past year and to express our sincere appreciation for the continuous guidance, leadership, and encouragement received from the University’s senior management team. The Department would also like to extend its heartfelt thanks to all colleagues for their dedication and contributions to teaching, research, programme development, and programme administration. Their commitment and professionalism have been instrumental in advancing the Department’s academic excellence and strategic objectives.

On 30 July 2026, a faculty member from our department participated in the China International Game Developers Conference (CIGDC) in Shanghai. Held under the theme “Harnessing Innovation, Empowering the Future,” the conference was organised by the China Audio-video and Digital Publishing Association and brought together game developers, industry experts, business leaders, and policymakers from around the world. The event served as a significant platform for discussing emerging trends in artificial intelligence, globalisation, and innovation within the digital entertainment and gaming sectors, while fostering dialogue on strategies for advancing the sustainable and high-quality development of the gaming industry. Senior representatives from government bodies, industry associations, and local authorities attended the conference.

In July 2026, our colleague Dr. Zhang presented the latest research on “AI-Driven Illumination-Adaptive Enhancement for Robust Mobile AR Games” at the 9th International Conference on Machine Learning and Machine Intelligence (MLMI 2026), held in Tokyo, Japan.

Our Faculty Member Dr. Wong have been invited as a guest and award presenter for the Mobile Application Innovation Contest (MAIC) Hong Kong Region Competition, held this year at Hong Kong Polytechnic University in July, 2026. MAIC is a premier international collegiate event where students leverage Apple's SDKs and developer tools to build innovative iOS mobile and Apple AI applications that tackle real-world challenges. It is always incredibly inspiring to hear such diverse, forward-thinking proposals and witness the creativity of our next generation of tech talent. And the top three winners will join the final competition in Hangzhou, China.

Our faculty member joined the AI for Retail Forum 2026 and the 6th Asia's Best Commerce Awards Ceremony, held at KPMG’s offices in Central in July, 2026. It was an insightful afternoon centered around the theme, "Dual-Engine Growth: Balancing Token Dynamics (Computational Power) and Human Capital in AI-Powered Commerce." The discussions offered deep insights into how we can effectively bridge the gap between emerging AI technologies and the human talent driving our retail industries. It is encouraging to see these collaborative efforts to foster innovation in our commerce ecosystem.

Titled MR Séance Illusion: Connecting with Soul Fragments in Porcelain, the exhibition innovatively integrates physical ceramics with Mixed Reality (MR) technology to explore the profound themes of trauma and healing.

In June 2026, our colleague presented the latest research on the development of an elderly-friendly Human–Computer Interface (HCI) at the 8th World Aging and Rejuvenation Conference (ARC‑2026), held in Prague, Czech Republic. ARC‑2026 convened experts from diverse disciplines, including science and technology, philosophy and politics, sociology, psychology, and geriatrics, thereby fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration. The conference provided a dynamic platform for advancing scholarly understanding of aging and longevity.

Our faculty member recently participated in "HKICT Awards 2026" - Student Innovation Award - Education field Meeting and Roundtable discussion on June 10th. He connected with fellow higher education representatives and HKICT Award representatives to exchange insights on fostering technological creativity and academic excellence.

We are proud to share that 57 ADS students have successfully earned the Introduction to Generative AI certificate from Google.

The Introduction to Generative AI by Google is a course designed to explain the fundamentals of generative AI, how it differs from traditional machine learning, and how to use Google tools to develop generative AI applications. By completing this certification, these students have taken an important step toward becoming future-ready professionals equipped with AI literacy and innovative thinking skills.

Dr. Azhar enhances data science education by integrating real-life data collection from the Shue Yan University campus into his coding courses. He designs assignments that require students to gather authentic, observable data—such as the number of campus buildings, floors, gym facilities, and canteens—using official university sources and on-site observation. This approach grounds learning in a familiar environment and helps students understand how real datasets are formed.

The 36th HKSYU Athletics Meet concluded successfully. ADS students demonstrated exceptional athletic performance. The Department extends its warmest congratulations to all award recipients on their remarkable achievements.

To enrich students' campus life and promote interaction among different departments, the "1st Hong Kong Shue Yan University Esports Tournament — VALORANT", co-organized by the Department of Applied Data Science (ADS Department) and the Applied Data Science Society (ADS Society), successfully concluded on March 27th!

Postgraduate Education Fair 2026 was successfully launched on 11 March 2026, welcoming prospective students interested in advancing their academic journey. Visitors had the opportunity to explore our postgraduate programmes and learn about admission pathways.

Our team was on site throughout the event, ready to answer questions and address any concerns. From programme details to future career development, students received clear and helpful guidance to support them. We look forward to meeting more future postgraduates in GDM soon!

On 7 March 2026, the Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) hosted a seminar in collaboration with the Hong Kong Game Development Association (HKGD) at the VR Laboratory (RHB 507) and E-sport Lab (RHB 504). The speaker, Mr. Michael Sze, Head of Secretariat of HKGD and Director of CSoft Game Company, shared insights on Hong Kong’s game development landscape, indie game trends, and challenges faced by local creators. He and several developers also presented successful case studies from both local and overseas markets.

The Game Development Laboratory of the Department of Applied Data Science successfully held the Integrated Motion Capture Training Workshop on 4 March at RHB 507. GDM students took part in a hands‑on session using the Xsens MVN Link system, learning how to set up, calibrate, and capture full‑body motion data.

Participants also practiced importing motion data into Unreal Engine, Unity, and Maya, gaining valuable real‑world experience with industry-standard tools. The workshop showcased the lab’s capabilities in animation, VR/AR, human–computer interaction, and AI-driven character animation, supporting both teaching and research across multiple disciplines.
The event was well received and provided students with practical skills directly applicable to today’s game development and digital media workflows.

Department of Applied Data Science Year 3 students, Chong Ka Kin, Tin Lok Lee, Yip King Hang, along with faculty member Dr. Muhammad Azhar who received the award with them, participated in the prestigious Huawei ICT Competition 2025-2026 AI Innovation Track and secured 3rd prize.

The competition gathered student teams from various universities worldwide to showcase innovative AI-driven solutions addressing real-world challenges using Huawei technologies like MindSpore. This achievement highlights the department's dedication to nurturing talent in artificial intelligence and ICT innovation, showcasing their capability to excel in highly competitive, technology-focused events that advance digital transformation and practical AI applications.

On 4 February 2026, with the support of University Admissions Office (UAO) and International and Greater China Student Support Office (IGCSSO), Dr. Chang Liu from our department was invited to participate in an information seminar to introduce the postgraduate programme Master of Science in Game Development and Management (MSc‑GDM).

During the seminar, our student Mr. Gabriel Pang, a current MSc‑GDM student, shared his learning experiences at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. In addition to his role as a student, Mr. Pang is a pioneer in the Hong Kong gaming and comics industry, with over 22 years of professional experience. His sharing provided prospective students with valuable first‑hand insights into both industry practices and postgraduate study at HKSYU. The event also served as an excellent platform to present our new postgraduate programme and to address students’ questions.

On 3 February 2026, postgraduate students from MSc in Game Development and Management (MScGDM) programme visited Gameiracle Co. Ltd., one of Hong Kong’s leading local game studios, for an inspiring industry sharing session on data-driven marketing. Established in 2004, GAMEIRACLE Co. Ltd. is a local game studio specialising in digital entertainment and the game industry in Hong Kong. The company is well known for developing multiple horse-racing games that have achieved No. 1 rankings in the local market. During the visit, students gained valuable insights into professional game development practices and data-driven marketing strategies within the gaming industry. The session provided students with first-hand exposure to real-world industrial operations, enhancing their professional awareness and practical understanding.

On the afternoon of January 18, 2026, the finals of the first National College Innovation and Transformation Competition (Macau Division) concluded successfully at the Hengqin·Macau Youth Entrepreneurship Valley. With the theme "Focusing on Innovation, Driving Transformation, and Creating the Future," the competition brought together 24 outstanding teams from Macau universities, presenting a high-level showcase of scientific research innovation and results transformation. The project "Grinding and Testing Science—Pioneering Domestic High-Precision Industrial Material Friction Performance Testing," involving core member Zhang Chengwei, a 2025 Applied Data Science student from Shue Yan University, stood out and won the gold medal, fully demonstrating the innovative capabilities and practical skills of the university's students.

Our faculty member Dr. Wong Ying-Kit with our ADS students to achieve the Bronze Prize Award at the Techno-Humanities Entrepreneurship Competition 2025. This remarkable accomplishment highlights the dedication and innovative spirit of our faculty and students in advancing interdisciplinary knowledge. The Award Ceremony for the Saint Francis Prize in Techno-Humanities (AI Humanities) 2025, and the Award Ceremony for the Techno-Humanities Entrepreneurship Competition 2025, co-organized by the Ip Ying To Lee Yu Yee School of Humanities and Languages and the Lions Youth Innovation and Technology Foundation (LYITF). Both hosted by Saint Francis University.

The Game Development Laboratory from the Department of Applied Data Science is proud to announce the successful completion of the "One-Day Integrated Motion Capture Training Workshop".

The event was a resounding success, with many staff members actively participating and engaging in the hands-on training sessions. This workshop provided participants with foundational knowledge and practical skills to set up, calibrate, and perform live-streaming or recorded motion capture sessions. Attendees explored the integration of full-body (Xsens MVN Link), hand (Manus Gloves), and facial (Faceware) data into target 3D applications such as Unreal Engine, Unity, and Maya.

Our faculty member recently participated in SIGGRAPH Asia 2025, the 18th ACM SIGGRAPH Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques in Asia, held from 15–18 December 2025 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). As a premier event in computer graphics, interactive techniques, AI, XR, animation, and gaming, SIGGRAPH Asia brought together researchers, developers, creators, and industry professionals from around the world to exchange ideas and showcase innovations shaping the future of technology and creativity.

On 17 December 2025, three representatives from the department participated in a visit to Huawei’s headquarters to examine potential avenues for collaboration in research, teaching and learning, as well as laboratory infrastructure development. The visit proved highly productive, providing colleagues with insights into the latest global advancements in innovative technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), smart campus solutions and applications, AI-driven motors, and large-scale database infrastructures. Furthermore, the delegation gained a deeper understanding of Huawei’s strategic development initiatives, which align closely with national priorities.

UnitedXR Europe 2025 – Hong Kong is organized by the Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Association (HKDEA), which spearheads a strategic initiative to establish a “Hong Kong Pavilion” at an international event in Brussels, Belgium. This project aims to showcase and promote Hong Kong’s creative industries through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR) technologies. In addition to serving as a judge for the “UnitedXR Europe 2025 Project – Hong Kong,” the ADS faculty member delivered a seminar entitled “XR-Beyond Entertainment: Extended Reality and New User Experiences” during the kick-off ceremony on 24 November 2025.

On 21 November 2025, a faculty member from the Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) was invited to serve as an Award Presenter for the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2025 in the categories of ICT Startup Award and Digital Entertainment Award. Additionally, the faculty member contributed as a member of the judging panel during the evaluation process in August 2025.

Our Faculty Member Participates in the NEXX CFO Forum 2025 at the Google Hong Kong office on Nov 19th, 2025. Organized by NEXX Innovation Alliance in close collaboration with Google Cloud, the forum served as a premier platform for CFOs, CXOs, senior financial executives and technology leaders from diverse industries to explore how cloud and AI can reshape enterprise performance.

The Department of Applied Data Science is excited to share the success of our recent workshop, “Build & Publish Your Flappy Bird Game in Unity.” On 17 November 2025, Game Development Laboratory and VR Lab co-hosted an intensive workshop on building a Unity 2D game. This workshop guides all participants in building an infinite side-scroller where a bird navigates between green pipes, incorporating physics-based movement, collision detection, scoring systems, a polished UI, and game state management. Within four hours, all participants have successfully recreated the classic Flappy Bird game in Unity and published it on Itch.io. This workshop offers a great opportunity for our students to develop their hands-on technical skills and encourages them to start building their creative portfolios using a simple game mechanism.

On November 15, 2025, during Info Day at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, Dr. Muhammad Azhar, Associate Head and Programme Director of the BSc in Applied Data Science, delivered a compelling talk titled “Empowering the Future Workforce: Integrated Education in Applied Data Science.” The presentation focused on the BSc-ADS undergraduate program, showcasing its innovative curriculum designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge required to excel in the rapidly evolving field of data science. On the evening of October 31, 2025, the Preparatory Committee of the Department of Applied Data Science at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, in collaboration with SenseTime and the open-source organization DataWhale, held the “AI + X Campus Tour: SenseTime LazyLLM Workshop” in Room H303, 3rd Floor, Wen Kang Building.

On October 28, we hosted the grand opening of the Game Development Laboratory. The opening ceremony featured a special Esports competition showcase, where student players teamed up with senior university management to participate in an exciting match. The event celebrated collaboration, innovation, and the future of game development in education and industry.

Established in 2016 through the collaborative efforts of scientists and entrepreneurs, the Future Science Prize emphasizes original basic scientific research and recognizes individuals (regardless of nationality) who have made significant scientific contributions in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan.

Department of Applied Data Science students participated in the prestigious JUCC × IBM watsonx GenAI Hackathon held at The University of Hong Kong Centennial Campus on 18 October 2025, under the supervision of ADS faculty member Dr. Muhammad Azhar, and became finalists.

On the afternoon of October 11, 2025, members of the Preparatory Committee for the Department of Applied Data Science at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, in collaboration with the Business Investment Society and 68 participating students, jointly attended the Fall Research Tools Workshop for Theses. This event aimed to enhance students' academic research efficiency and thesis writing skills through specialized workshops and practical guidance, covering research workflow management, AI writing techniques, and productivity tools. It also strengthened ties between the Department Committee, students, and the Business Investment Society

Our faculty members participated in the prestigious LSCM Logistics Summit 2025 held at Hong Kong Science Park on 10 October 2025. The summit gathered industry leaders, government officials, and academics to discuss advancements in smart logistics and the Port Community System (PCS). Professor KL Fan, Dr. Muhammad Azhar, and Dr. Kevin Wong contributed their expertise, reflecting the faculty’s commitment to innovation in digital logistics, blockchain applications, and regional connectivity.

On September 20, 2025, members of the Applied Data Science Department Preparatory Committee of Hong Kong Shue Yan University, along with numerous participating students, participated in the Hong Kong Shue Yan University x Coze AI Workshop in classroom RLB502, 5/F, Low Block, Graduate School Complex. This workshop, co-organized by the Preparatory Committee and ByteDance's Coze AI Agent platform, aimed to provide students with a deep understanding of AI Agent and the Coze platform, enabling them to master various Coze functions and experience the empowering value of AI in learning, life, and the workplace.

In the academic year 2025/2026, Hong Kong Shue Yan University is proud to announce that Mac Lab, located on LG204 of Main Academic Building, is now officially in service!
As part of the Game Development Laboratory, Mac Lab is equipped with 41 iMac workstations, providing students with a powerful and creative environment for game design, development, and digital media production.

The Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) successfully hosted the 2025 Orientation Day for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs and the Graduate School. The events occurred on 26 August (Tuesday) and 29 August (Friday) 2025, marking the introduction of new members to our expanding academic community.

The ADS’s Annual Departmental Retreat was successfully conducted on 21st August 2025, serving as a valuable platform for faculty members to exchange ideas, foster collaboration, and share expertise. We were honored to have senior management from the University in attendance, including Senior Vice President Prof. Catherine Sun, Academic Vice President Prof. Selina Chan, and Associate Academic Vice President for University Research Dr. Alex Li, who provided valuable insights to our colleagues.

The Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) recently hosted a seminar and discussion event in collaboration with Hong Kong Game Development Association (HKGD) . The event took place in the RHB 507 (Virtual Reality Laboratory). The seminar featured Mr. Michael Sze, who serves as the Head of Secretariat of HKGD as well as the Director of CSoft Game Company. 仁大全新課程「娛樂及遊戲應用數碼方案（榮譽）理學士」旨在培養學生具備整合數碼娛樂與遊戲應用的專業理論知識及技能，在跨學科科目中掌握管理與溝通能力，以應對遊戲開發產業對數碼專業人才日益增長的需求。畢業生可於遊戲產業中擔任互動遊戲設計師、數碼娛樂製作人、機器人設計師、軟體工程設計師，又或遊戲創意產業中的各個崗位。

2025年6月6日到7日，應用數據科學學系學生會3位代表同學參加了博鰲亞洲論壇國際科技與創新論壇2025年香港會議。本次會議由博鰲亞洲論壇與香港特別行政區政府共同主辦，是該論壇首次在香港舉辦，標誌著香港在推動國際科技創新合作方面邁出了重要一步。在應用數據科學系會籌備委員會與香港菁英會的合作下，應用數據科學系會籌備委員會為本系學生爭取到了3個名額。本屆會議以「科技引領未來，創新驅動轉型」為主題，同時香港論壇的討論亦聚焦於「善用香港內聯外通優勢，促進全球創新協作」。會議吸引了約800名來自海內外的頂尖專家、學者、政商領袖及國際組織代表，共同探討全球科技創新的發展現狀、挑戰與未來趨勢。

應用數據科學學系代表參加了第十六屆海峽兩岸和香港、澳門經貿合作研討會會議。本屆研討會由中華全國工商業聯合會、香港中華廠商聯合會、台灣工商企業聯合會和澳門中華總商會共同主辦。當日研討會還設立主旨演講和專題討論環節，與會者圍繞“數字經濟發展趨勢與機遇”“智能科技與產業升級”等議題展開討論。

ADS 代表參加香港專業及資深行政人員協會於6月2日舉辦的「專資會高峰論壇2025 : 創新科技 構建未來」。當日，創新科技及工業局局長孫東擔任主禮嘉賓並進行專題發言，以及邀請到香港大學校長張翔、協會副會長兼香港應用科技研究院董事局主席李惠光，以及香港科技大學首席副校長郭毅可擔任專題發言分享嘉賓。當日約200位嘉賓滙聚一堂，交流暢敘，共同為香港構建國際創新科技中心出謀獻策。

We are proud to announce that the results of the 2025 Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) have been officially released, and our Applied Data Science program has achieved a significant milestone. This year, two teams from our department participated in this prestigious international competition, both earning the Successful Participant award. This accomplishment highlights our students’ strong academic abilities and outstanding teamwork. We would also like to extend our gratitude to Dr. Muhammad AZHAR, who served as the advisor for both teams.

Our faculty member has been invited to participate in the World Internet Conference 2025, to be held in Hong Kong. The World Internet Conference (WIC) was established as an international organization on July 12, 2022, with its headquarters located in Beijing, China. This initiative was jointly launched by several prominent entities, including the Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), the National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Alibaba Group, Tencent, and Zhijiang Lab. The WIC is dedicated to the governance of global internet development and actively seeks to establish a high-level dialogue platform for the international internet community.

The Outstanding Performance Scholarship (OPS) goes to CHUNG, Ze Kin, while the Reaching Out Award (ROA) is awarded to ZHANG, Linjing; ZHANG, Zijian; LIAO, Wenxuan; LIU, Junhe; and KUANG, Xiurong. The Department sincerely appreciates these students for their hard work and excellence in performance.

In the context of Industry Revolution 4.0, the proliferation of AI tools has significantly impacted daily life, particularly in the realm of education. Understanding how AI tools can enhance teaching and learning processes has become increasingly crucial. On March 26, 2025, Lenovo invited Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) to participate in an educational event aimed at exploring the ways in which new personal AI tools can support educators in both teaching and research endeavors. The event showcased various computing devices equipped with AI capabilities, enabling participants to experience and leverage cutting-edge technology. This initiative aims to foster success and creativity among educators across diverse disciplines, including both the liberal arts and the sciences.

HONG KONG, March 20, 2025 - The Preparatory Committee of the Department of Applied Data Science at Hong Kong Shue Yan University organized a specialized workshop titled "Long-term & Short-term Paper Workshop: AI Tools." The event, jointly hosted with HA Spencer and strongly supported by the university's Business Investment Society, attracted 31 students who participated enthusiastically.

On 13 March 2025, our faculty members participated in IBM Hong Kong Technology Forum 2025. This year's theme is "Capture AI's Full Potential". This event brought various visionary leaders, industry innovators and IT professionals to explore the potential of open AI. By participating in panel discussions and keynote sessions hosted by the best from industry, our colleagues gained valuable insights and learned about the latest industry trends and technologies.

The Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China visited our Virtual Reality Laboratory (VR Lab) at Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) on 26th Feb 2025, focusing on the subject of the integration of virtual and augmented reality in education. This visit highlighted the University's innovative approach to digital pedagogy, emphasizing the importance of cutting-edge technology in enhancing student learning experiences.

The Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) hosted a well-attended seminar on February 25th featuring Dr. C.H. Cheng, Director of Research and Technology Development at the Logistics & Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Centre (LSCM). Dr. Sheena Ramazanu and Dr. Natalie LEE Po Man from Hong Kong Metropolitan University recently visited the Social Robotics and Digital Living Lab at Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU). The visit aimed to explore opportunities for collaboration in research and teaching. Dr. Mehmood Nawaz, the director of the lab, warmly welcomed the team.

It is an honour of our faculty member to attend the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Future Science Prize Week, hosted by the Future Science Awards Foundation. This event is scheduled on November 1st at the Hong Kong Science Museum. It was an extraordinary gathering of scientific luminaries and enthusiasts.

The Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) hosted a well-attended seminar featuring Dr. Lucas Göbeler from the University of Hamburg on October 31, 2024. Invited by Dr. Bob Ke, Assistant Professor at ADS, Dr. Göbeler delivered his talk titled "Hybrid Sports – Digital Innovation through Resource Integration," which attracted a diverse audience of faculty members and students. The seminar was held at RHB507 (Virtual Reality Lab).

Aligning with all UGC-funded and private universities in Hong Kong, a faculty member from the Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) had the honour of joining the first CUPP 2025 Organizational Committee Meeting on 30 October 2024, on behalf of HKSYU. The CUPP aims to groom and develop promising young tech and entrepreneurial talents in Hong Kong who could become future entrepreneurs.

Colleagues from the Department participated in the Cyberport Venture Capital Forum 2024 on October 24 and 25, which focused on addressing global market uncertainties, economic volatility, and geopolitical challenges. Various entrepreneurs from digital sectors shared their compelling visions and experiences on navigating this complex and competitive landscape while driving sustainable growth.

We are pleased to announce the retirement of Prof. K.S. Leung, a distinguished professor and cherished mentor to our ADS colleagues and students. To honor his significant contributions to the Department and the University, senior management and departmental colleagues hosted a wonderful dinner on October 18, 2024.

We were honored to welcome Mr. Ng Chi Wo, Head of the Chinese Culture Promotion Office from HKSAR, along with his colleagues, to HKSYU on October 17, 2024. During their visit, they shared insights on the latest developments in promoting Chinese culture within the community. Two ADS academic staff out of five scholars of Hong Kong Shue Yan University are among the World Top 2% most cited scientists, according to a 2024 report recently released by Stanford University.

With the support and engagement of students, the Department held its first "Open-source Learning Mobilization" meeting on 26th September 2024, at the Innovation and Incubation Hub (IIH) at HKSYU. This meeting is a key component of the departmental "Open-source Learning Initiative."

Thanks to the invitation from the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Center, our faculty member, along with ten students from the Department of Applied Data Science (ADS), enjoyed a captivating performance of "Qian Xuesen" presented by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Drama Troupe at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University theatre on 26th September 2024.

The representative from the ADS is pleased to attend the celebratory dinner marking the 75th Anniversary of the People's Republic of China – The Higher Education Sector of Hong Kong 2024. The event provides an opportunity to engage with numerous professors from various disciplines and institutions.

On 24th September 2024, the Civil Service Bureau (CSB) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) organized a wonderful "Government Career Fair 2024" on the campus of HKSYU. A total of 13 government bureaux and departments participated, presenting information on over 20 civil service grades. This event provided students with valuable insights and opportunities to shape their future career paths.

Our faculty member was honoured to serve as judges for the 2nd Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Postdoctoral Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition - Hong Kong Region. A number of promising postdoctoral candidates and teams were selected to represent Hong Kong. We were impressed and excited to review the innovative ideas and practices presented, all aimed at advancing the development of applied science and technology in Greater China.

The Department launched a new promotional video in early August, marking a significant milestone in its outreach efforts. Prior to this launch, we would like to express our gratitude to all members and students for their contributions.

The Department successfully completed the accreditation process for new programmes in early September 2024. With the full support of senior management and colleagues, the accreditation was carried out smoothly and effectively. We look forward to the next page!

The Annual Departmental Retreat was successfully conducted in late August 2024, providing a valuable platform for the sharing of ideas and expertise among faculty members. The Department is poised to embark on a new chapter with the incorporation of new colleagues: Dr. Bob Ke and Dr. M. Nawaz.

Our faculty members participated in the annual Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum (DELF) 2024, organized by Cyberport, from August 16 to 18 at the Cyberport campus. The theme for this year was "Imaginary Fairground: AI-Powered Entertainment in the Web 3.0 Era." The event included industry forums, experiential zones, workshops, and competitions, creating an immersive carnival atmosphere for attendees.

Our ADS colleagues attended the premier Business GoVirtual (BGOV) event this year, which gathered business leaders, entrepreneurs, enterprises, innovators, IT experts, solution providers, marketers, and others seeking to stay ahead of the technological curve and empower their businesses through digital transformation.

To enhance the digital competency of students in digital humanities, the Virtual Reality Laboratory (VR Lab) under the Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) has organized the first One-Day Intensive Workshop for students from Social Work backgrounds.

The External Visit of the Association of Secondary School Principals in the Virtual Reality (VR) Lab was an immersive and enlightening experience. The principals were welcomed into the state-of-the-art VR Lab at SYU.

SYU ADS students won the potential prize in Huawei ICT Competition 2023-24 Hong Kong. The Huawei ICT Competition is supported by 11 tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, with nearly 900 students participating.

Four HKSYU researchers are in the World Top 2% most cited scientists in a report recently released by Stanford University. Two of them are from Department of Applied Science. The report reflects the research impacts to the academic community produced by colleagues and the recognitions of their works internationally.

Department of Applied Data attended two Education Expo in July 2022 (The 28th Hong Kong International Education Expo and HKTDC Education & Careers Expo 2022). There are talks on the topic "Big data is everywhere - How to equip yourself ?" and VR driving demo are displayed for visitors' experience. Both are well-received by people interested in Data Science.

IBM Cloud Pak for Data is a new platform introduced into HKSYU. Predict outcomes faster using this platform built with data fabric architecture. Collect, organize and analyze data, with AI features to dynamically create, train, manage, and monitor AI and advanced models.

The Department of Applied Data Science is offering the first Bachelor of Science programme in Shue Yan University. The Bachelor of Science with Honours in Applied Data Science (BSc-ADS) is now open for application for Year-1 entry of academic year 2022.

The last Colloquium Series event in 2021 “AWS Cloud Essentials for Business Leaders” was held on 20 December 2021. Participants were being introduced basic concepts of cloud computing with useful case studies.

The second event in iFREE GROUP Innovation and Research Centre Colloquium Series 2021/22 seminar "Ad-Hoc Security for Smart Things" concluded successfully on 1 December 2021.

In order to purchase more robots and provide students with more experiential learning opportunities in the Big Data Laboratory, Social Robotics & Digital Living Laboratory, and Virtual Reality Laboratory, SYU hopes to receive further funding from the Research Grants Council.

iFREE GROUP Innovation and Research Centre won 3 international design awards, including 'Best Public Service Interior Hong Kong' in International Property Awards; 'DNA Paris Design Awards' and "Successful Design Award'.

The proposed programme is to respond to the HKSYU’s Strategic Plan 2021-25 to reinvent the liberal arts education for the digital era. Professor Louis LEUNG, Head of the Department, indicated that the BSc-ADS will admit the first batch of students in the summer of 2022.

Hong Kong Shue Yan University is going to offer two new undergraduate programmmes focusing on digital media technology and big data in the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic year respectively.

Three brand new laboratories have just been opened in September 2020 in Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU), focusing on how big data, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and robotic technologies can be applied to teaching, learning, and research in digital living.
