This FAQs page is intended to help students applying to the Master of Science in Game Development and Management (MSc-GDM) programme for the 2026/2027 academic year (Fall 2026 Cohort).

What are the admission requirements?

Applicants should hold a recognized bachelor's degree in digital media, computer science, digital business, or other related fields from an institution recognized by the university. Both recent graduates and individuals with relevant industry experience are encouraged to apply.

Am I required to take the English Proficiency Test?

English proficiency is one of the University's admission requirements for all postgraduate programmes. You will need to take either TOEFL, IELTS (Academic Module), or CET6, unless

  • You are a native English speaker, or 
  • You obtained a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution where the medium of instruction was English. You should submit a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate as part of your online application.

Do I need to know any computer programming languages or have experience with game engines?

The MSc-GDM is designed to accommodate students from diverse digital backgrounds who have a strong passion for tackling game engines (e.g., Unity or Unreal Engine) and possess certain computer programming skills (e.g., Python, C#, or JavaScript). While these skills will be taught as part of the curriculum, students with a fundamental knowledge of them will have an advantage in exploring these skills at an advanced level.

 

When is the application deadline?
The online application period* starts on November 2025 and ends on 01 May 2026.

I am currently a final-year undergraduate student. Can I apply?

Sure! It is wise to plan ahead for your studies. Please begin by submitting your latest transcript for assessment. The MSc-GDM will extend conditional offers to selected applicants before the required qualifications are obtained. If you receive a conditional offer, you will be required to submit the official final transcripts and degree certificates for verification when they become available.


What materials must be submitted along with my online application?

Required Application Documents

  1. Completed application form with a recent photo (i.e., approximately 40mm (Width) x 50 mm (Height) showing a full frontal face with clear facial features
  2. A Photocopy of HKID Card or other identification document (ie. passport/ EEP 往來港澳通行證)
  3. Photocopies of the Graduation Certificate(s) and/or Degree Certificate(s) of your undergraduate/postgraduate studies 
    • For qualifications obtained in Mainland China:
      The Graduation Certificate AND Degree Certification should be accompanied by the Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certificate and Online Verification Report of Higher Education Degree Certificate by CHSI 學信網 (教育部學籍線上驗證報告及中國高等教育學位 線上驗證報告) 
    • For Mainland Applicants with overseas qualifications
      The Graduation Certificate and/or Degree Certification should be accompanied by the Overseas Credential Evaluation Report (國外學歷學位認證書) issued by Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE) (教育部留學服務中心) 

      (Please ensure that the three reports above remain valid for at least the next six month)
  4. Photocopies of Official Transcript(s) with Grading Scheme from post-secondary institutions/universities attended
  5. Medium of Instruction Certificate, or TOEFL / IELTS score report
  6. Personal Statement and CV
  7. Portfolio (if any) 
  8. TWO Referees Contact

Should I submit a Portfolio?

Sure! These documents are optional and may be submitted under the category of "Other Documents."

There is no standard format for portfolios. However, please note that the application portal has a file size limit of 25 megabytes. Large files may fail to upload or download properly for the interview panel’s review. We recommend sharing your portfolio in a viewable format, such as a webpage, PDF, or video link.


Will University accept a reference report or a letter submitted by hard copy or mail?

Sure! However, the University only consider reference reports and letters received through the online system. Referees will receive an invitation email after the application is submitted and will complete the recommendation via an online form.

Failure to provide referees may affect the progress of your application. Please ensure referee email addresses are accurate.


Why my referees can't receive the invitation from the university?
  • Check if the referee's email address is input correctly.
  • Ask your referee to check his/her junk/spam mail folder.
  • Make use of the "Resend" button to send another invitation to your referee. 

Important Notes for Sending Official Transcripts to HKSYU
Within 1 month after submitting your online application, you are required to mail the following documents to the Programme Office at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. Failure to provide the required documents may delay your application. 
Official transcripts from your undergraduate and postgraduate studies must be sent directly by the issuing institution to the Programme Office in a sealed envelope for verification purposes.   Please send the above Transcript Request Form  (PDF version)  to your institution while applying your transcript copy.

How can I double-check my online application before submitting it, as amendments may not be possible once submitted?

Sure! It is important to double-check your online application before submission. If you encounter any technical difficulties with the admission system, please contact the Computing Services Centre via email at csc@hksyu.edu.

How much is the tuition fee for 2026/2027 admission?

The tuition fee for MSc-GDM is HK$165,000* (HK$5,500 per 30 credits), subject to change and final approval by Hong Kong Shue Yan University.

For full-time students, the fee is payable in two instalments over one academic year.
For part-time students, the fee is payable in four instalments over two academic years.
*Please note that all fees are subject to revision and final confirmation by the University.


Are any scholarships or financial aid available?

Sure! Please view the website of the Graduate School and Office of Student Affairs for the list of available scholarships and eligibility criteria. The information will be updated by the Graduate School and the Office of Student Affairs directly. Students are advised to visit their website from time to time for relevant information.

Local students can also apply for a loan from the Extended Non-Means-Tested Loan Scheme (ENLS). Please visit the Student Financial Assistance Agency website for further information on this source of financial assistance. They can also apply to the Continuing Education Fund for reimbursement of their course fees up to a maximum of HK$25,000. Please visit the CEF website for further details. 

 
Do I need a visa to study in Hong Kong?

Sure, a student e-Visa is a must for non-local students. A person who enters Hong Kong as a visitor cannot become a student at a school, university or any other educational institutions.


Should I apply for the student e-Visa on my own?

If you are admitted and decide to accept the offer, the university will assist you with your student visa application. Detailed instructions can be found in the online admission system after you have paid a non-refundable tuition fee.


How long does the e-Visa application process take?

The process takes approximately 6-8 weeks at the Hong Kong Immigration Department after all required documents have been received. We strongly recommend that you submit all required documents promptly after accepting the offer. Late submission may result in delays that could affect your ability to begin your studies on time and may impact your academic performance due to insufficient attendance.

Please note:
  • Visa approval is at the sole discretion of the Hong Kong Immigration Department.
  • The university cannot guarantee approval or expedite the processing of your student visa application.
  • Please ensure that all submitted documents are complete, accurate, and properly prepared.

How will I receive my student e-Visa?

The university will email your student's e-Visa to the registered email address you provided after it has been issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department.


Can I apply for Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG) Visa after graduation?

The university is not responsible for handling Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG) applications and cannot provide advice on individual cases. For enquiries related to the IANG, please contact the Hong Kong Immigration Department directly.


Will I be provided with University housing?

Possible! For details regarding the accommodation, please visit the website of Hall Management Unit Office (HMU) and refer to their own admission policy.


How much does it cost to live in Hong Kong?
