Master Talk — Predictive Analytics In Healthcare With Machine Learning
The Department of Data Science and Digital Innovation, is pleased to invite you to attend a Master Talk given by Prof. Thomas KS CHOI . The topic is Predictive analytics in healthcare with machine learning.
Thomas, Kup-Sze Choi received the PhD degree in computer science and engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2004. He was a full professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the founding program director of Hong Kong’s first MSc in Health Informatics programme, and the director of the Centre for Smart Health. Thomas is now the director of the TechCosmos Limited. He also serves as a governor of the HL7 Hong Kong and an ITF panel member of the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission. His current research interest is artificial intelligence and its application in healthcare.

Abstract: When it comes to healthcare, an application domain that concerns human life, use of machine learning for predictive analytics deserves heightened attention. Like other machine learning applications, quality data is critical to prediction accuracy. Given the wide variety of health data, standardization has been in place for building electronic health record systems, which is not only essential to ensure data quality and effective data management, but also interoperability. Classical machine learning algorithms like random forest and support vector machine are readily applicable for supervised learning, while neural networks and deep learning algorithms can also be used, despite being black boxes which do not provide clinicians with the underlying logic of predictions that they require. After all, healthcare professionals play a critical role in the process, i.e., human-in-the-loop. Their expertise is vital to the understanding of the domain of interest and the subsequent modelling, the labelling of data for supervised learning, as well as the evaluation of the prediction results. This talk will discuss the abovementioned topics and issues, along with sharing of my research experience on healthcare predictive analytics.
