The Department of Applied Data Science is proud to announce our participation in Hong Kong Shue Yan University's 55th-anniversary celebratory campaign, "Leveraging Digital Humanity for Social Good" (數碼人文拓展社會公益). As part of this university-wide initiative, we are hosting a two-part event series that bridges the gap between cutting-edge technology and community engagement. First, we invite the public to our lecture, "Beyond Entertainment: Extended Reality and Our New Digital Life" (超越娛樂:延展實境與我們的新數碼生活), which explores how VR, AR, and wearable tech are moving beyond gaming to reshape culture, education, and everyday living. Following the lecture, we are putting theory into practice with our Community Service Project: "eSports and Digital Inclusion for the 'Silver Generation'" (數碼共融:銀齡電競賽). Held in our Game Development Laboratory, this mini-esports competition offers our senior community a hands-on, supportive environment to explore digital technology, build confidence, and discover the vibrant possibilities of post-retirement digital life. Join us as we celebrate HKSYU's milestone by using applied data science to foster a more inclusive, connected society.

Public Lecture Series (公開講座系列) :
Topic: Beyond Entertainment: Extended Reality and Our New Digital Life

Abstract:

Extended Reality (XR) is steadily moving beyond laboratories and gaming environments into our everyday digital lives. This lecture introduces the broader XR technology spectrum, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR) and wearable electronics (WE), and explores their technological characteristics as well as evolving modes of user interaction.

Building on this foundation, the session will explore emerging trends in XR development and consider how these technologies are reshaping digital entertainment, cultural consumption, and everyday living. It will also highlight the role of technological innovation in advancing digital transformation within the humanities, opening new possibilities for creativity, interpretation, and engagement across communities, culture, and education.

Community Service Project Series (社區協作計劃系列) :
Topic: eSports and Digital Inclusion for the “Silver Generation” (數碼共融:銀齡電競賽)

Abstract:

This session, organised by HKSYU’s Department of Applied Data Science, takes the form of a mini esports competition for the “silver generation.” Through interactive challenges held in the department’s Game Development Laboratory, participants are invited to experience the possibilities of the digital world and expand the horizons of their everyday lives.

This session seeks to bridge the gap between age and technology, fostering understanding and connection across generations. Through digital engagement, it supports elderly adults in gradually becoming familiar with technology, easing anxieties, building confidence in its use, and helping them integrate more comfortably into digital life post-retirement.
